Topic 7: Text and Images
As an administrative designer with MCAST, I often use text and images when publishing my work on social media. You can say it is a critical part of the digital marketing era to combine these two. It is important to do so because without the image there is no interest in the post and without the text, the viewer will simply look at it for a few seconds and if there is no text he/she will continue scrolling down.
Now, as for my own work I barely used text in my images. However, as I like to hike around the island of Malta during winter times and capture the views, I started taking shots of interesting signs that disturb the average hiker and nature itself.
Now when looking at one of these images, let say this one. If there is no sign and no pole we are looking at a beautiful scenery. However, as the photographer (me) is placing the sign at the centre of the image, you can’t help but read the text. In this case, juxtaposing the image with the text can create a whole new experience for the viewer. The viewer can feel unwelcome and confused as to whether this sign is actually can be taken seriously or not because of the hand-written sign and the misspelt words.
